EigenLayer is a new thing on Ethereum that lets you ‘restake’ your existing staked crypto. This means you can use your staked assets to help secure other blockchain services. In return, you can earn more rewards. It’s like putting your money to work in a second job.

Think of it this way: when you stake Ether (ETH) on Ethereum, you help secure the main Ethereum network. EigenLayer lets you use that same staked ETH to secure other new services, called Actively Validated Services (AVSs). This is called restaking.
Why Restake on EigenLayer?
The main reason is to earn extra rewards. By putting your staked assets to work on more networks, you increase your potential earnings. It also helps make the overall crypto ecosystem more secure. New projects need security, and EigenLayer provides a way for them to get it without building their own validator networks from scratch.
However, there are risks involved. If the new services you are securing have problems, you could lose some of your staked assets. It’s important to understand these risks before you start.
How to Start Restaking on EigenLayer
Here are the basic steps. You will need some ETH, or other liquid staking tokens like stETH.
- Get a Crypto Wallet: Make sure you have a wallet like MetaMask.
- Get Staked ETH or Liquid Staking Tokens: You can stake ETH directly or use liquid staking solutions. Popular options include Lido (stETH) or Rocket Pool (rETH). If you need to get ETH first, you might need to move it between blockchains. See how to move your crypto between Ethereum and Solana safely if you are starting on a different network.
- Go to the EigenLayer Website: Visit the official EigenLayer app.
- Connect Your Wallet: Link your crypto wallet to the EigenLayer app.
- Choose an Operator: EigenLayer uses ‘operators’. These are people who run the nodes that secure the AVSs. You delegate your staked assets to an operator. You can find information about different operators on the EigenLayer site.
- Deposit Your Assets: Follow the instructions to deposit your staked ETH or liquid staking tokens. You are essentially telling EigenLayer to use these assets to secure selected AVSs through your chosen operator.
- Start Earning: Once deposited, your assets will start working to secure the AVSs. You will begin to earn rewards, typically in ETH and the AVS’s own token. You can read more about how to earn more crypto by actively validating on EigenLayer for a deeper understanding.
Important Things to Remember
- Risks: Restaking adds new risks. Understand slashing (penalties for bad behavior) and smart contract risks.
- Lock up Periods: Your assets might be locked for certain periods.
- Fees: Operators charge fees for their services.
- Research: Always do your own research on EigenLayer, the AVSs, and the operators before you deposit any funds.
EigenLayer offers a new way to earn yield, but it requires careful consideration of the risks involved.
