Ethereum gas fees can be super high. This makes using decentralized applications, or dApps, expensive. Base is a newer network connected to Ethereum. It offers much lower fees. You can move your ETH from the main Ethereum network to Base to take advantage of these savings.

Why Use Base?
Base is a Layer 2 network. This means it builds on top of Ethereum. It processes transactions off the main Ethereum chain. This makes them faster and cheaper. Many popular dApps are now available on Base. Sending your ETH there lets you interact with them without breaking the bank.
What You Need
- A crypto wallet like MetaMask. Make sure it’s set up for the Ethereum mainnet.
- Some ETH in your wallet to pay for transaction fees on Ethereum.
- A web browser to access the bridging service.
How to Bridge Your ETH
You will use a bridging service. These services move your crypto assets between different blockchains. One popular and trusted option is the official Base bridge. You can find it by searching for ‘Base bridge’ or visiting the official Base documentation.
Step 1: Connect Your Wallet
Go to the Base bridge website. You will see an option to connect your crypto wallet. Click this button and select MetaMask (or your preferred wallet). Follow the prompts in your wallet to approve the connection.
Step 2: Select ‘Deposit’
On the bridge interface, you will usually see options to deposit or withdraw. Choose ‘Deposit’. This means you are sending assets from Ethereum to Base.
Step 3: Choose ETH and Amount
Select ETH as the token you want to bridge. Then, enter the amount of ETH you wish to send. Be sure to leave a small amount of ETH in your wallet for gas fees on the Ethereum network. You will also see an estimate of how much ETH you will receive on Base. This usually includes the fee for the bridge transaction.
Step 4: Approve the Transaction
Click the ‘Deposit’ or ‘Bridge’ button. Your MetaMask wallet will pop up asking you to confirm the transaction. Review the details carefully. You will see the gas fee for this transaction on Ethereum. If you agree, click ‘Confirm’.
Step 5: Wait for Confirmation
The transaction will now be processed on the Ethereum network. This can take a few minutes depending on network congestion. Once confirmed on Ethereum, the bridge will send your ETH to your wallet on the Base network. This second step also takes some time.
Step 6: Switch Your Wallet to Base Network
Your wallet is likely set to the Ethereum mainnet. You need to switch it to the Base network to see your ETH. In MetaMask, click the network dropdown at the top. If Base is not listed, you may need to add it manually. You can find instructions on how to add the Base network to MetaMask on the official Base documentation or other reliable crypto sites.
Once your wallet is on the Base network, you should see your bridged ETH. You can now use it for cheaper transactions on Base dApps. Remember that while bridging is generally safe with official tools, you should always do your own research and be cautious of unofficial sites.
Always double check the URL of any bridging service you use. Scammers create fake sites to steal your crypto.
Bridging assets to other networks is a common practice in crypto. It allows users to access different ecosystems and potentially save money. For example, moving assets might be similar to how you would prepare for other layer 2 solutions like Arbitrum Nitro, which also aims to make transactions faster and cheaper.
