Ethereum’s Danksharding: Making Layer 2s Cheaper and Faster

What is Sharding?

Think of the Ethereum blockchain like a busy highway. Right now, it can get jammed with too much traffic, causing delays and higher fees. Sharding is like adding more lanes to that highway.

Initially, sharding was planned to split the blockchain into many smaller chains. This would help process more transactions at once. However, the plan has evolved.

Danksharding: A Simpler Approach

Danksharding is a new version of the sharding idea. Instead of splitting the main chain, it focuses on making it easier to store data. This is super important for Layer 2 networks.

Layer 2 solutions, like Optimism and Arbitrum, process transactions off the main Ethereum chain. They then bundle these transactions and send the proof back to the main chain. This saves space and reduces fees on Ethereum.

The Data Availability Problem

The biggest challenge for Layer 2s is something called ‘data availability’. This means making sure that the transaction data processed on Layer 2 is actually available and verifiable on the main Ethereum chain. If the data isn’t available, the Layer 2 network isn’t truly secure.

Danksharding aims to fix this by creating a new type of transaction. These transactions will be designed specifically to carry large amounts of data cheaply. Ethereum nodes won’t need to store all this data themselves. Instead, they will rely on special nodes called ‘data blobs’ and proof systems to ensure data availability.

Benefits of Danksharding

  • Lower Transaction Fees: By making data storage cheaper, Layer 2s can pass those savings onto users, making transactions much more affordable.
  • Increased Throughput: More data can be processed and made available, allowing Layer 2 networks to handle a lot more transactions.
