zkSync’s zkPorter: A New Plan for Faster, Cheaper Crypto

What’s the Big Problem?

These rollups bundle up lots of transactions together and then create a small proof that all those transactions are valid. This proof is sent to the main Ethereum chain.

With zkPorter, the transaction data itself is stored off-chain. However, there’s still a way to make sure it’s available when needed. zkSync’s system aims to guarantee that this data can be accessed. This is a key difference from other ways of storing data off-chain.

Why It Matters

This new architecture could mean much faster transaction speeds. It could also make transaction fees much, much lower. This makes using crypto applications more practical for everyday use.

By separating the data storage from the main chain’s processing, zkSync can handle more activity. This is a big step towards making blockchains more scalable. It’s similar to how projects are trying to improve data handling in other areas of crypto, like with the rise of DePIN.

The Trade-offs

Storing data off-chain does come with some considerations. While zkPorter aims to ensure data availability, it’s a different security model than putting everything directly on Ethereum. Users need to trust the system’s ability to make the data accessible.

zkSync is essentially creating a more efficient system. It’s a way to get the benefits of blockchain security without paying the high price for every single piece of data. This approach could pave the way for more people to use crypto without worrying about high fees or slow speeds.
