EigenLayer is a new way to earn more from your existing crypto. It lets you ‘restake’ your ETH or other liquid staking tokens. This means you can earn rewards from multiple sources. Think of it like lending your money out to different trusted businesses. You get paid by all of them.

What is EigenLayer Restaking?
Normally, when you stake ETH, it helps secure the main Ethereum network. EigenLayer lets you take that same staked ETH and use it to secure other new services. These services are called ‘Actively Validated Services’ or AVSs. By securing these AVSs, you can earn extra rewards on top of your regular staking rewards.
It’s important to understand that restaking comes with extra risk. If the AVS you are securing has problems, you could lose some of your staked crypto. This is why it’s called ‘restaking’ to you are putting your already staked assets to work again.
Before You Start: What You Need
To use EigenLayer, you need to have:
- Staked ETH or Liquid Staking Tokens: You can use raw ETH that you have staked, or tokens like stETH (from Lido) or rETH (from Rocket Pool).
- A Crypto Wallet: Like MetaMask, which is connected to the Ethereum network.
- Some ETH for Gas Fees: You’ll need ETH to pay for transactions on the network.
Step-by-Step Guide to Restaking on EigenLayer
Step 1: Choose Your Staked Asset
First, decide what you want to restake. If you have ETH already staked with a liquid staking provider, that’s a good starting point. You can also stake your own ETH directly with EigenLayer, but this requires running your own validator node, which is more complex. For most users, using liquid staking tokens is easier.
Step 2: Visit the EigenLayer App
Go to the official EigenLayer website. Make sure you are on the correct site to avoid scams. You will connect your crypto wallet to the app.
Step 3: Deposit Your Staked Assets
Once your wallet is connected, you will see an option to ‘Deposit’ or ‘Restake’. Select the staked asset you want to use (e.g., stETH). Enter the amount you wish to restake.
Step 4: Choose an Actively Validated Service (AVS)
EigenLayer will show you a list of available AVSs. Each AVS offers different potential rewards and has its own risk level. Some popular AVSs might focus on data availability, machine learning, or other blockchain services. Read the descriptions carefully to understand what each AVS does and its associated risks. You can then choose which AVS or AVSs you want to delegate your restaked assets to.
Step 5: Confirm the Transaction
After selecting your AVS and the amount, you will need to approve the transaction in your crypto wallet. This includes a gas fee. Once confirmed, your staked assets will be restaked with EigenLayer and delegated to your chosen AVS(s).
Step 6: Monitor Your Earnings
You can track your total earnings, which include your original staking rewards plus the new rewards from the AVSs, directly within the EigenLayer app. Rewards are usually distributed periodically.
Important Considerations
Risk Management: Restaking increases risk. Always understand the potential downsides of each AVS. Only restake assets you can afford to lose.
Vesting Periods: Some AVSs may have ‘vesting’ periods. This means your assets might be locked for a certain time. Read the terms before committing.
Gas Fees: Transactions on Ethereum can be expensive. Factor in gas costs when deciding how much to restake.
