Beyond Lido: Explore More Liquid Staking Options on Ethereum

Many people stake their Ether (ETH) to earn rewards. Liquid staking lets you do this while still using your staked ETH in other parts of decentralized finance (DeFi). Lido is the biggest name in this space. But there are other options worth checking out.

What is Liquid Staking?

When you stake ETH, it gets locked up. You cannot use it for anything else. Liquid staking solves this. You stake your ETH with a protocol. In return, you get a token that represents your staked ETH. This token, called a liquid staking derivative (LSD), can be traded or used in DeFi applications.

For example, you might stake 1 ETH and receive 1 stETH (from Lido). You can then use that stETH to lend, borrow, or provide liquidity on other platforms. You still earn staking rewards on your original 1 ETH.

Why Look Beyond Lido?

Lido is dominant, but its size can also be a risk. If something goes wrong with Lido, it could impact a large amount of staked ETH. Other protocols might offer different features, better yields at times, or focus on specific niches.

Other Liquid Staking Protocols

Rocket Pool

Rocket Pool is a popular alternative. It’s a decentralized Ethereum staking protocol. It allows anyone to stake ETH. You can run your own node if you have enough ETH. Or, you can deposit smaller amounts and share a node with others.

Rocket Pool issues rETH as its liquid staking token. rETH accrues staking rewards directly. So, 1 rETH will eventually be worth more than 1 ETH. This is different from some other LSDs where you get more tokens over time.

Stakewise

Stakewise is another player. It focuses on making staking accessible. They offer pooled staking. Users deposit ETH and get sETH2. This token earns staking rewards and can be used in DeFi.

Lido Alternatives and Restaking

The world of staking derivatives is also expanding with restaking. Protocols like EigenLayer allow you to restake your staked ETH (or LSDs) to secure other networks. This can earn you additional rewards. You can learn more about these strategies in guides like How to Get More From EigenLayer Restaking: Smart Strategies.

Protocols such as Puffer Finance are emerging to simplify the restaking process. They aim to make it easier for users to participate and earn boosted yields. You can find more details in our Puffer Finance Explained: Easy Way to Restake Your Crypto guide.

What to Consider

When choosing a liquid staking protocol, think about:

  • Decentralization: How decentralized is the protocol?
  • Smart Contract Risk: What are the risks associated with the protocol’s code?
  • Yield: How much reward are you earning? This can change.
  • Token Utility: How easily can you use the LSD token in other DeFi applications?
  • Fees: What are the service fees for staking?

Exploring different liquid staking protocols beyond Lido can offer variety and potentially new opportunities in the growing DeFi ecosystem.
