How to Get More From EigenLayer Restaking: Smart Strategies

EigenLayer is a new way to earn extra rewards on your existing crypto. It lets you ‘restake’ assets you’ve already put to work, like Ethereum. This means you can earn more without locking up new funds. But how do you get the most out of it?

What is EigenLayer Restaking?

Normally, you stake your Ethereum to secure the network and earn rewards. EigenLayer adds another layer. It allows you to stake that same Ethereum again on other new services. These services need security, and EigenLayer provides it. In return, you get extra rewards. Think of it like getting paid twice for the same job.

Strategies for Maximizing Returns

There are a few main ways to approach EigenLayer to get better yields:

1. Choose Your Restaking Service Wisely

EigenLayer works with many different services, called Actively Validated Services (AVSs). Each AVS offers different potential rewards and carries different risks. Some might offer higher interest rates but could be newer or less tested. Others might be more established with lower but more predictable returns.

2. Understand Delegation vs. Validation

You can either run your own validator node or delegate your stake to someone else. Running your own node offers more control and potentially higher rewards, but it requires technical skill and a significant investment. Delegating is much simpler. You pick a trusted operator and send them your stake. For most people, delegation is the easier path. You can learn more about this choice in our guide on EigenLayer Restaking: Delegate or Validate?

3. Use Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs)

Some platforms allow you to ‘liquid restake’. This means when you restake your crypto on EigenLayer through them, you get a token back representing your stake. This token can then be used in other parts of decentralized finance (DeFi), like lending or trading. This lets you earn rewards from EigenLayer and DeFi at the same time. Platforms like Puffer Finance make this process simpler. You can find out more about them here: Puffer Finance Explained: Easy Way to Restake Your Crypto.

4. Diversify Your Restaking

Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Spread your restaked assets across different AVSs and operators. This helps reduce your risk if one service runs into problems. If one AVS has issues, your other restaked assets should remain safe and continue earning.

Risks to Consider

Restaking is not without risk. Here are the main things to watch out for:

  • Slashing: If the validator you delegate to misbehaves or goes offline, your staked assets could be penalized. This means you could lose some of your original investment.
  • Smart Contract Risk: The platforms that facilitate restaking have their own code. Bugs or exploits in this code could lead to loss of funds.
  • AVS Risk: The new services you are restaking on might fail or be hacked. This could also lead to losses.
  • Liquidity Risk: If you use liquid restaking tokens, there’s a chance you might not be able to easily sell them or use them in DeFi if the market conditions change.

Always do your own research before investing. Understand the specific risks of each platform and AVS you consider. Start with a small amount to test the waters before committing more funds.
