More Blockchains Are Splitting Up to Get Faster

Blockchains are getting crowded. Like a busy highway, too many cars trying to go to the same place slow everything down. This is a big problem for cryptocurrencies. If they are slow and expensive to use, people won’t use them.

Celestia, a blockchain project, found a way around this. They decided to split up the work. Instead of one blockchain doing everything, Celestia focuses on just one part: data availability. This means it makes sure transactions are recorded and available for others to see. Other blockchains can then use Celestia to handle this part, while they focus on other tasks like processing those transactions.

What is a Modular Blockchain?

This idea of splitting up tasks is called a modular blockchain. Think of it like building with LEGOs. Instead of one giant brick, you have different types of bricks for different jobs. One brick might be for the base, another for the walls, and another for the roof.

Modular blockchains do something similar. They separate key functions:

  • Execution: This is where transactions are actually processed and changed.
  • Settlement: This is where transactions are finalized and confirmed.
  • Data Availability: This ensures that all the transaction data is published and accessible.
  • Consensus: This is how the network agrees on the validity of transactions.

Celestia handles data availability and consensus. Other blockchains, sometimes called ‘rollups’ or ‘sovereign chains’, can use Celestia for these tasks. They then focus on execution and settlement. This is similar to how zkSync Era upgrades are creating ‘hyperchains’ to make Ethereum faster and cheaper.

Why Are More Blockchains Going Modular?

The main reason is scalability. When blockchains are modular, different parts can be upgraded or scaled independently. This means the whole system can handle more transactions faster and cheaper.

New projects are building on this modular idea. They are creating specialized blockchains that focus on specific functions. This allows them to be more efficient.

For example, some modular chains might be designed specifically for gaming, while others could be for decentralized finance (DeFi). This specialization allows for better performance tailored to the specific use case.

What Does This Mean for You?

If blockchains can become faster and cheaper to use, more people will be able to use them. This could lead to more everyday applications being built on blockchain technology. Think about things like digital identity, where you control your own information, or decentralized applications that offer new ways to interact online. The idea that decentralized networks are building real world stuff is becoming more of a reality because of these improvements.

Modular blockchains are a key step in making crypto and blockchain technology more accessible and useful for everyone. It’s a sign that the technology is maturing and finding practical solutions to its biggest challenges.
