EigenLayer Restaking Explained: How to Earn More ETH

EigenLayer is a new way to earn more from your Ethereum. It lets you ‘restake’ your staked ETH. This means you can use your already staked ETH to secure other blockchain networks. You get extra rewards for doing this.

What is EigenLayer Restaking?

Normally, you stake your ETH to help secure the Ethereum network. You earn rewards for this. EigenLayer adds another layer to this. You can take your staked ETH, or ETH liquid staking tokens like stETH from Lido, and put them into EigenLayer.

EigenLayer then uses your staked ETH to secure new services, called ‘Actively Validated Services’ or AVSs. These AVSs could be new blockchains, data availability layers, or other decentralized systems. Because you are helping to secure these new services, you get paid additional rewards, often in the native token of that service.

Why Restake with EigenLayer?

  • Higher Potential Yields: You can earn more than just the standard Ethereum staking rewards.
  • Support New Blockchains: You help secure innovative new decentralized technologies.
  • Flexibility: You can use existing liquid staking tokens, making it easier to get started.

How to Restake on EigenLayer: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Get Staked ETH or Liquid Staking Tokens

You need ETH that is already staked or a liquid staking token. Popular options include:

  • stETH from Lido Finance. If you are looking to earn more on your ETH, learning how to use Lido is a good first step.
  • Other liquid staking tokens recognized by EigenLayer.

Make sure your ETH is in a compatible wallet like MetaMask.

Step 2: Visit the EigenLayer App

Go to the official EigenLayer website. You will need to connect your crypto wallet.

Step 3: Choose an Operator

EigenLayer works with ‘Operators’. These are entities that run the infrastructure for the AVSs. You deposit your liquid staking tokens with an Operator. The Operator then uses these tokens to perform validation tasks for the AVSs.

You will see a list of available Operators. Each might offer different rewards or have different minimum deposit amounts. Research them before choosing.

Step 4: Deposit Your Tokens

Select an Operator and follow the prompts to deposit your liquid staking tokens. You will need to approve the transaction in your wallet. This involves paying gas fees on the Ethereum network.

Step 5: Earn Rewards

Once deposited, your tokens are working to secure the chosen AVSs. You will start accumulating rewards. These rewards will be in the native tokens of the AVSs you are securing. You can typically claim these rewards through the EigenLayer interface.

Be aware that restaking comes with risks. You are exposed to the risks of both Ethereum staking and the new AVSs you are securing. There is a chance of slashing, where your staked assets could be penalized if the network or AVS experiences issues.

Important Considerations

  • Slashing Risk: If the Operator you choose or the AVS they are securing acts maliciously or fails, your deposited assets could be reduced (slashed).
  • Smart Contract Risk: Like all DeFi protocols, EigenLayer and the AVSs have smart contracts, which can have bugs.
  • Withdrawal Periods: There can be waiting periods when you want to withdraw your staked assets from EigenLayer.
  • Complexity: While this guide simplifies it, understanding the underlying technology and risks is crucial.

EigenLayer offers an exciting way to potentially increase your ETH earnings. However, always do your own research and understand the risks before depositing any funds. It’s similar to how understanding the costs involved in other networks can help you manage your funds, for example, learning about Solana gas fees helps you optimize transactions there.
