Making Money with MEV on Ethereum: How Flashbots Helps

Ethereum is a busy place. Lots of transactions happen every second. Some of these transactions can be very profitable if you know what to look for. This profit is called Maximal Extractable Value, or MEV.

What is MEV?

Think of MEV like finding a shortcut in a race. On Ethereum, people who order transactions can sometimes see opportunities to make a quick profit. This often happens with big trades on decentralized exchanges (DEXs) or when someone is trying to borrow or lend crypto.

For example, if someone is about to make a huge trade that will change the price of a token, someone else could see that coming. They could then make a trade right before the big one, profiting from the price change. This is MEV.

The Problem with MEV

Before tools like Flashbots, trying to get MEV was a bit of a free for all. People would flood the network with transactions, hoping theirs would be picked first. This could slow down the whole network and make gas fees really high for everyone. It wasn’t a great experience for normal users.

Flashbots to the Rescue

Flashbots is a project that created a better system for dealing with MEV. They built a special marketplace where people looking for MEV opportunities (called ‘searchers’) can send their transaction bundles directly to people who build blocks of transactions (called ‘builders’).

This means:

  • Searchers can offer a small cut of their profits to builders if their bundle is included.
  • Builders can pick the most profitable bundles to include in their blocks.
  • Validators (the people who confirm transactions) get paid for including these blocks.

This system is much more organized. It stops the spammy transactions that used to clog up the network. It also makes MEV extraction more fair and transparent.

How You Can Participate (as a Searcher)

If you are interested in trying to capture MEV, you can become a searcher. This usually involves writing code to spot opportunities and then using Flashbots to send your transactions. It is not for beginners, as it requires technical skills and understanding of how Ethereum works.

Common MEV strategies include:

  • Arbitrage: Buying a token on one exchange and selling it on another for a small profit because the prices are slightly different. You might have seen our guide on how to make money with flash loans on Arbitrum, which is a form of arbitrage.
  • Liquidation: In lending protocols, if a loan’s value drops too low, it can be liquidated. Searchers can profit by initiating these liquidations.
  • DEX Trading: Placing trades on decentralized exchanges to profit from large price swings caused by other traders.

Risks and What to Consider

While Flashbots makes MEV safer, it is still a complex area. You could lose money if your strategy doesn’t work or if gas fees are too high. It is also important to understand the risks associated with smart contracts in general. For example, when dealing with new protocols, it is wise to be cautious. You can learn more about keeping your restaked ETH safe and avoiding smart contract problems, which highlights the general need for security awareness.

Flashbots has made MEV a more structured and less disruptive part of the Ethereum ecosystem. It allows those with the technical know how to profit from network activity in a more organized way.
