L2 Sequencers Explained: Faster Transactions, Lower Fees

Layer 2 (L2) solutions are built on top of big blockchains like Ethereum. They help make transactions faster and cheaper. One key part of how they do this is called the sequencer.

What is a Sequencer?

Think of a sequencer like a traffic controller for L2 networks. When you send a crypto transaction on an L2, it doesn’t go straight to the main blockchain. Instead, it first goes to the sequencer.

The sequencer’s job is to:

  • Collect all the transactions happening on the L2.
  • Put them in order.
  • Bundle them up into a batch.
  • Send this batch to the main blockchain (like Ethereum) for final confirmation.

By batching transactions, L2s can process many more transactions at once than the main blockchain could alone. This is how they achieve higher speeds.

How Sequencers Lower Fees

Every transaction on a main blockchain costs a fee. When you bundle many L2 transactions together, you only pay one fee to the main blockchain for the whole batch. This cost is then split among all the users in that batch.

So, instead of paying a high fee for each individual transaction, you pay a much smaller share of the batch fee. This makes using L2s much cheaper.

Types of Sequencers

There are a few ways sequencers can work:

Centralized Sequencers

In the beginning, many L2s used a single, centralized sequencer. This means one company or entity controlled the ordering of transactions. It’s simple and efficient but has a downside. If this single sequencer goes down or acts unfairly, it can cause problems for the network.

Decentralized Sequencers

To make L2s more secure and reliable, developers are working on decentralized sequencers. Instead of one entity, a group of independent computers (nodes) share the job of sequencing. This makes the network much harder to shut down or control.

Decentralized sequencers are still a developing area. Some L2s are experimenting with different ways to share this responsibility. This includes using technologies like EigenLayer or other shared sequencing solutions. These aim to improve both speed and security.

Maximizing Throughput and Minimizing Fees

As an everyday user, you benefit from sequencers without much direct action. The L2 network you use handles the sequencing. However, understanding how it works can help you appreciate the technology.

When choosing an L2, look at its transaction speed and fee structure. Networks that have efficient sequencing mechanisms will generally offer better performance. Some L2s also offer features that can further reduce costs, especially for frequent traders.

The goal of these L2 advancements is to make blockchain technology accessible to more people. Faster and cheaper transactions are a big part of that. For users on networks like Arbitrum and Optimism, improvements in sequencing can also lead to faster crypto withdrawals back to the main chain.
