Ethereum’s Gas Fee Relief Is Coming: Proto-Danksharding Explained

Good news for anyone using Ethereum Layer 2 networks. A major upgrade called Proto-Danksharding is rolling out. This should make transactions much cheaper for users on these networks.

What is Proto-Danksharding?

Think of Ethereum like a busy highway. Right now, it can get crowded, and that makes tolls (gas fees) expensive. Layer 2 networks are like express lanes built next to the highway. They help move traffic faster and cheaper.

Proto-Danksharding is a step towards making these express lanes even better. It introduces a new way for Layer 2 networks to send data back to the main Ethereum chain. This new method is called “blob carrying.”

Basically, it’s like creating a much bigger, cheaper truck to carry all the data from the express lanes. This reduces the cost for the express lanes themselves.

Why Does This Matter for Ethena and Others?

Many popular services run on Layer 2 networks. Ethena, a popular synthetic dollar protocol, is one example. If you use decentralized finance (DeFi) applications or other services on Layer 2s, you’ve probably noticed gas fees can still add up.

Proto-Danksharding will directly lower the cost for these Layer 2 networks to post their data to Ethereum. This cost saving should be passed on to you, the user, in the form of lower transaction fees.

This upgrade is part of Ethereum’s bigger plan for “full Danksharding,” which aims to drastically increase how much data Ethereum can handle. Ethereum’s Danksharding upgrade promises huge gains for Dapps, and Proto-Danksharding is the first big step.

What to Expect

After the upgrade, Layer 2 networks will likely see a significant drop in their transaction costs. This means interacting with apps on these networks will become more affordable.

For projects like Ethena, this means they can operate more efficiently. For users, it means potentially cheaper trades, cheaper swaps, and cheaper interactions with all the cool things being built on Ethereum’s Layer 2s. Smart Wallets Are Making Crypto Easier to Use, and cheaper fees will only help this adoption grow.

This is a positive development for the Ethereum ecosystem, making it more scalable and accessible for everyone.
