zk-SNARKs vs. zk-STARKs: The Tech Behind Faster Crypto

Crypto transactions can sometimes be slow and expensive. Layer 2 scaling solutions are trying to fix this. They use a special kind of math called zero-knowledge proofs. These proofs let you prove something is true without revealing the secret information. Two main types of these proofs are zk-SNARKs and zk-STARKs. Let’s look at what makes them different.

What are Zero-Knowledge Proofs?

Imagine you want to prove you know a secret password to a door without actually telling anyone the password. Zero-knowledge proofs work like that. They allow one person (the prover) to convince another person (the verifier) that a statement is true. This happens without giving away any extra information beyond the truth of the statement itself.

In crypto, this is super useful for privacy and scaling. It means transactions can be processed off the main blockchain, made much faster, and then a small proof is sent back to the main chain. This helps lower fees and speeds things up. It’s a bit like how Ethereum’s upgrades aim to make things cheaper.

zk-SNARKs: Small but Mighty

zk-SNARKs stands for Zero-Knowledge Succinct Non-Interactive Argument of Knowledge. That’s a mouthful, but the key words are ‘succinct’ and ‘non-interactive’.

  • Succinct means the proofs are very small. This makes them quick to check.
  • Non-interactive means the prover and verifier don’t need to exchange many messages back and forth. It’s a one-shot proof.

However, zk-SNARKs have a downside. They require a ‘trusted setup’. This means a secret key is generated at the start. If this key is not destroyed properly, it could be used to create fake proofs, which is a security risk. Despite this, zk-SNARKs are widely used by many Layer 2 solutions because their proofs are so small and efficient to verify.

zk-STARKs: Trustless and Scalable

zk-STARKs stands for Zero-Knowledge Scalable Transparent Argument of Knowledge. Let’s break that down:

  • Scalable means they can handle a lot of data and grow well.
  • Transparent means they do not need a trusted setup. This is a big deal. Anyone can check the proof without needing special secret information.

The trade-off for being trustless and transparent is that zk-STARK proofs are larger than zk-SNARK proofs. This means they take a bit longer to check on the main blockchain. But, they are seen as more secure in the long run because there’s no risk from a compromised trusted setup.

Which One is Winning?

Both zk-SNARKs and zk-STARKs are important for scaling blockchains. zk-SNARKs are popular now because their small proof sizes are very efficient. Many projects are built using them.

zk-STARKs are gaining traction because of their security advantages, especially the lack of a trusted setup. As the technology improves, zk-STARKs might become more efficient and widely adopted. It’s a bit like how different Layer 2 solutions are competing, as we’ve seen with Arbitrum vs. Optimism.

The choice between them often depends on what a project values more: the current efficiency and smaller proof sizes of zk-SNARKs, or the long-term security and trustless nature of zk-STARKs. Both are key technologies helping crypto become faster and cheaper.
